Medicare’s Histories – Hybrid Event

Join editors Esyllt W. Jones, James Hanley, and Delia Gavrus for the launch of Medicare’s Histories: Origins, Omissions, and Opportunities in Canada. This event features a conversation with Mary Jane Logan McCallum and will be hosted by Nathan Nickel.

Medicare’s Histories brings together leading social and health historians to reflect on the evolution of medicare and the missed opportunities characterizing its past and present. Contributors inquire into the strengths and weaknesses of publicly insured health care and critically examine medicare’s unfinished role in achieving greater health equity for all people in Canada. As COVID lays bare social inequities and the inadequacies of health care delivery and public health, this book shows what was excluded and what was—and is—possible in health care.

About the Presenters

Esyllt W. Jones is the Humanities Research Professor at the University of Manitoba. Her books include Radical Medicine: The International Origins of Socialized Medicine in Canada (ARP Books) and Influenza 1918: Disease, Death and Struggle in Winnipeg (UTP).

James Hanley is a professor of History at the University of Winnipeg. He is the author of Healthy Boundaries: Property, Law, and Public Health in England and Wales, 1815-1872 (University of Rochester Press).

Delia Gavrus is an associate professor in the History Department at the University of Winnipeg. She specializes in the history of science and medicine.

Mary Jane Logan McCallum is a professor of History and Canada Research Chair in Indigenous People, History, and Archives at the University of Winnipeg.
