Battle of the Somme

In my book, I talk about the 28th Battalion from Regina moving into the area of the Somme in September 1916. I write on page 163 that “Arriving in Picardy, they were impressed by the ‘wide open fields without hedges or trees, slightly rolling and no high hills,’ which reminded them of the landscape back home in Western Canada.” I was wondering whether this was actually true, so this past summer I checked it out in a tour of the Somme battlefield. The two photos attached were taken just outside the town of Albert. The landscape does indeed look a lot like Saskatchewan.
